Mortar and Pestle Specialty Medicine Compounding Pharmacy

Compounding Lab Tour - Electronic Mortar and Pestle, Ointment Mill and Homogenizer

Ointment Mill There are no pieces of equipment that have revolutionized our practice more than the electronic mortar & pestle (EMP), ointment mill and homogenizer.  Specialty Medicine Compounding Pharmacy has the ability to produce cosmetic quality ointments and creams thanks to these pieces of machinery.

The ointment mill is used to mix products and reduce particle size of active ingredients. Regardless of route of administration the mill is a great piece of equipment for particle size reduction to ensure delivery of the drug. Originally designed for use in the paint industry, the ointment mill uses three rollers that are extremely close together to pass the product between to crush particulate matter.

Electronic Mortar & Pestle The EMP is used to mix and blend creams, ointments and oral liquids. An automated machine, the EMP uses a spinning blade and a moving arm to mix products. Products can be weighed, mixed and dispensed all in the same jar.

HomogenizerThe homogenizer is used to reduce particle size. We use this piece of equipment solely in the preparation of injectable products where particle size is essential. The blades of the homogenizer are first sterilized using an autoclave. Then the homogenizer blades are lowered into a beaker of the solution and ran at very high speeds. The solution is drawn up into the blade and shot out a very small in hole in the shaft of the blade assembly. Particle reduction is very quick at these high speeds.
